Associate Professor of Marketing Giles Jackson, Ph.D., spent his summer developing the Bryd School’s first-ever course on sustainable business strategy. Dr. Jackson published one of the first doctoral dissertations on the topic in the early 1990s. In the practical component of the course, students will help Amphibian Ark (amphibianark.org) research various models for a new certification program to encourage the sustainable and ethical trade and management of native amphibian species. Thirty percent of amphibian species are threatened with extinction, primarily due to habitat loss. Associate Professor of Sport Management Brian Wigley, Ed.D., was selected as a 2013 NCAA Division III Faculty Athletics Representative (FAR) Fellow. He has served as the university’s FAR for the past three years. Dr. Wigley, who serves as the FAR liaison to the ODAC board of directors, was selected following a nomination from ODAC Commissioner Brad Bankston. As a 2013 FAR Fellow, he will take part in an institute at NCAA headquarters in Indianapolis and the 2014 NCAA Convention. At the institute, Dr. Wigley will participate in a 360-degree leadership assessment process and develop an action plan for implementation at Shenandoah. “I have been interested in serving at the national level for some time,” he said. “This is a great opportunity to learn from other FARs and bring that knowledge back to Shenandoah University and to the ODAC.” Associate Professor of Operations Management Mesut Yavuz, Ph.D., presented a paper, “A Route-First ClusterSecond Heuristic for an Electric-Vehicle Routing Problem,” at the joint international EURO-INFORMS 2013 conference in Rome, Italy. Conservatory The following individuals joined the fulltime faculty of Shenandoah Conservatory this fall semester: Visiting Associate Professor of Jazz Dance Bob Boross, Professor of Guitar Julian Gray, and Visiting Associate Professor of Music Therapy Anne Lipe. Associate Professor of Costume Design Jennifer Flitton Adams, M.F.A., designed costumes for “Les Miserables,” which 28 opened the Shenandoah Summer Music Theatre’s 30th anniversary season. Charles A. Levitan Chair in Music Theatre and Professor of Composition and Musical Theatre Direction Thomas R. Albert, D.M.A., and Lindé Hayen Herman’s one-act music drama “Lizbeth” had its Pittsburgh, Pa., premiere in September. Written in 1976 and supported by a grant from the National Endowment of the Arts, “Lizbeth” is based on the story of Lizzie Borden, notoriously accused (and acquitted) of the brutal ax murders of her father and stepmother in 1892 in Fall River, Mass. The opera originally opened at Shenandoah in 1976; there were two subsequent Shenandoah productions in 1987 and 2005. Adjunct Assistant Professor of Theatre Sally Anderson, M.S., performed this summer in a “role of a lifetime” as Miss Shepherd in the Unexpected Stage’s production of Alan Bennett’s “The Lady in the Van” in Silver Spring, Md. The part was originally made legendary by Maggie Smith in London in 1990. It recounts the amazing true story of the eccentric woman who lived in her van in Alan Bennett’s garden for 15 years. Joel Markowitz, theatre critic for the D.C. Metro Theatre Arts Review, said, “... watching Anderson command the stage was a pleasure, as she made every word, every line, every gesture, every scene come alive.” Anderson also recorded two audiobooks for Audible. com, including Margaret Storm Jameson’s autobiography “Journey from the North.” She taught theatre in PAVAN’s Summer Regional Governor’s School and presented an intensive theatre course at Shenandoah Conservatory Arts Academy. Adjunct Assistant Professor of Vocal Coaching Joel Ayau, D.M.A., served on the music staff of the Castleton Festival held at the private estate of Maestro Lorin Maazel in Rappahannock County, Va.
