this journey nearly a year ago. Customers can shop in this refreshingly calm
and eclectic space knowing their purchases make an impact. And while they
shop, they can also read the stories of the artisans who created the products.
One of the unique elements of DeBaz is the custom line of clothing, designed locally by Hartsville native, Amy Rowzee. “We searched for a clothing line that would fit our store and had a difficult time finding one that
would be a good neutral backdrop for our jewelry with natural fabrics and
was affordable,” Shannan explained. So, it was out of necessity that Amy
came on board. Working with the owners, Amy helped bring on board a talented seamstress, tweak patterns, find affordable organic fabrics and put it
all together.
Thus, DeBaz’s own clothing line, Libete was born. “While our other
collections in the store are already attached to a cause, the plan for Libete
beginning in the new year is that a percentage of proceeds from the clothing
will be donated to our monthly campaigns, Lindsey shares. Libete is special to both Shannan and Lindsey because from its profits they will choose
local monthly causes and have monthly campaigns that will both highlight
local areal charities as well as raise funds to support them. Shannan happily adds, “In addition, we are also in the works developing a special dress
pattern that will be set aside. A percentage of each dress will be donated to
a local woman’s shelter. This charity is dear to the heart of our seamstress.
As you have probably figured out by now, DeBaz is not your typical
boutique. Both Lindsey and Shannan site Philippians 2:4 as the verse that
DeBaz is founded on, “not looking to your own interests but each of you to
the interests of the others.” The products they sell directly impact hundreds
of families. Purchases facilitate children going to school, allow mothers to
provide for their children, enrich communities, and strengthen families.
DeBaz also designed their own clothing line called “Libete” — creole for
“freedom.” It is made locally in Society Hill; and purchases benefit local
women’s shelters.
To Shannan and Lindsey, success doesn’t come with the number on
the register. Success for them is found in what that number represents
— people taking the time to come and learn about the artisans who create their products. Because every single p urchase makes an impact.
Fair trade is not charity. Each artisan and business we work with set their
prices based on a fair working wage for their community. They set the
prices and we purchase from them. All the items purchased in the store
have been purchased for a fair wage. And, as our patrons purchase from
