Exciting change is on the horizon for housebuilding in the UK which presents a business opportunity for those of us working in the fenestration industry . The recently announced , Government funded , Help to Build scheme will see £ 150m of funding made available to make self-building more accessible and affordable . The Government believes the scheme could contribute 30,000-40,000 new homes in the UK per year - now that ’ s a lot of doors and windows . |
Currently in the UK , the majority of housebuilding is done by big construction companies . However , they are not currently meeting the country ’ s housing requirements and demand is now outstripping supply . In fact , it is estimated that there is a 250,000-home deficit . This is where the Help to Build scheme comes in . The idea is to empower individuals to build their own properties , how they want , where they want . This is revolutionary . Following changes to self-build mortgages in the 1990s , self-building a property |
was only a realistic option for the very wealthy , but the Help to Build scheme changes this .
If the Government is correct and the initiative encourages a huge uptake in self-building , there will be increased demand for the industries involved in housebuilding , including the fenestration industry , which is only a positive thing . However , the industry can only keep up with this increased demand if manufacturers and installers are there to fulfil it , and the suppliers are supporting in the delivery of it .
