61 Paintball Sports Promotions held its fourth event of the season, the West Coast Open (WCO), the weekend of August 8th, 2014 at the Rancho Jurupa Regional Sports Park in Jurupa Valley, California, about ten minutes west of Riverside. The picturesque sports park was perfect for an event of this size. With plenty of room for the six fields the PSP set up, a small trade show and tons of close-by parking, logistics were not an issue at this event. And the weather was not an issue either. If you were at the PSP Chicago Open you might still be wet after enduring those rainstorms. But those attending the West Coast Open used umbrellas to shield themselves not from the rain but the much-welcomed California sunshine. As mentioned, the PSP used six fields for this event and they were some of the most beautiful fields we’ve seen in some time. The short, green, turf-like grass played fast and stayed consistent all weekend. The team turnout for this event was at least to us, surprisingly low, with about 35 percent less teams at this event compared to the Chicago Open. That said, flights from the East Coast were unusually high this year and many of the missing teams were from east of the Mississippi. And competition for team entry fees is stiff in this region as there are a ton of leagues and events here almost weekly. That said, the vendor turnout was decent with Dye, Empire, DLX, Ninja, GI Sportz, HK and a handful of other companies present. To date this season the PSP has had three different professional champion’s Division winners in its three events. LA Infamous took the Dallas Open, Dynasty won the Mid Atlantic Open and Edmonton Impact won the Chicago Open. Tampa Damage, ranked third overall coming into the WCO is looking for a win. Houston Heat placed second in Chicago... could this be their first win of ‘14? How about the LA Ironmen, who have finished in the top six in all three events? WWW.PAINTBALLX3.COM
