WESTDALE SECONDARY SCHOOL
Alex Gunby
Upcoming EDM artist doubles as

Performing at Supercrawl, the arts & music festival headlined by indie rock legends Spoon, would be impressive
enough. Doing that alone at the age of sixteen is something
else all together - but for DJ and music producer Alex
Gunby, it’s just another gig.
When performing in front of dozens of spectators, most
people would be visibly nervous but Alex appears focused,
concentrated. While the crowd dances and enjoys his music,
Alex is intently at work operating the soundboards and mixing equipment in front of him. He says, “The best thing
about it is being on stage and playing my music and seeing
people dance to it and enjoy it… that’s a big part of why I do
what I do.”
As technology has advanced, it has become far easier for
artists and musicians alike to show their work to the world
and receive feedback. With websites like SoundCloud, music artists like Alex are given the chance to upload, record,
promote and share their originally created sounds.
OCTOBER 2014
He first became interested in the notion of producing music
when got a recording and mixing program known as Abelton
and began to mess around with the software. “I started playing drums and taught myself to play a bit of piano which
really helped shape my knowledge of music theory,” he continues. As he got older, Alex began to take producing more
seriously and eventually one of his tracks was featured on a
Top 50 EDM (Electronic Dance Music) website. With that
accomplishment, followed by his first live gig at the age of
fifteen, producing music has become Alex’s main focus—
aside from school.
He hopes to continue producing music as a career after
graduating from Westdale, but if it doesn’t work out, he says
he hopes to, “go to school for Audio Engineering for either
live performances or even in a recording studio so that way
I’m still involved in the whole music industry”.
Highlights of his music career thus far have included;
“meeting new people, making new friends, being able to play
my music live and see people dance.” His gigs have included
performances at Art Crawl, Club 77, A Midsummer’s
Dream and the VIIIth day, an electronic music festival in
Hamilton.
At the age of seventeen, Alex has already made great strides
in his music career. Stay tuned for Alex’s new singles and
upcoming gigs! Check out more information about shows at
