New Adult Awards

We can never thank our volunteers enough for all the time, energy and dedication they give to Girl Scouts—Dakota Horizons. The council is moving towards formal recognition of our volunteers throughout the year. To better recognize and celebrate our volunteers, we have created the new Adult Awards Handbook, featuring nine new awards and updated GSUSA awards. The handbook is a great resource for volunteers and contains information on how to complete a successful nomination, as well as all the new Nominations and Letter of Endorsement forms. Volunteers can be nominated for awards any time of year and can be nominated by girls, parents, fellow volunteers and in some cases, GSDH staff.

If you have a volunteer who has made a difference in your life, take the time to honor them by nominating them for one of our awards. It is fun, easy and means the world to our volunteers!

Volunteer Spotlight

Sheri O'Connell

Sheri O’Connell is a Troop Leader for two troops in Rapid City, SD and has been a Girl Scout volunteer for nine years. Girl ScoutsDakota Horizons is spotlighting Sheri for her dedication and selfless bravery for others.

While Sheri was vacationing with her family at Sheridan Lake in the Black Hills, she saved a young toddler from drowning in the lake. The child was playing with his siblings in shallow water but when the siblings moved away from him, he attempted to stand and follow. At that point, the toddler fell forward and was submerged and unable to regain his balance and began floating further into the lake. Sheri ran out into the lake and brought him back to the beach. Patting his back, Sheri saved this young toddler’s life as he had stopped breathing for a short time.

Sheri’s bravery and her dedication to the Girl Scout Promise and Law outside of Girl Scouts is a wonderful example of the amazing individuals we are fortunate to have volunteering with GSDH. You are an role model to us all!

If you know a Girl Scout Volunteer who deserves to be featured in our next Volunteer Spotlight, please contact the Volunteer Department at [email protected] or the Volunteer Director at (605)-271-9726.
