Girl Scout Named VFW’s Scout of

the Year

Lorisa Schoenbeck, a senior at Webster High School in Webster, SD, was honored as the VFW’s Scout of the Year on October 5th in Chamberlain, SD.

This award is open to members of a Boy or Girl Scout Troop, Venturing Crew or a Sea Scout Ship. Girl Scout candidates must have received the Girl Scout Gold Award, the highest honor a Girl Scout can achieve, as well as demonstrated exemplary citizenship in school, Scouting and

their community.

“Girl Scouts has been a huge part of my life. Starting as a kindergartener and now being a (High School) senior; it has taught me many life skills and shaped the person I am today. The experiences I’ve had are irreplaceable. It has expanded my horizons to places I can’t even imagine,” Schoenbeck said.

Troop 20271 Discovers London

Senior Girl Scouts from Thief River Falls, MN, traveled to London between July 30th and August 8th, 2013. Troop 20271, Elle J., Samantha B., Hannah B., Claire N., Alyce H. and leaders Laura Brickson and Andrea Zipprich, stayed at Pax Lodge in Hampstead, England. North of London, it is one of the four World Centres owned by WAGGGS. While on their trip, each girl in the troop was given a day to select a variety of activities for the group to do together, to ensure everyone got to experience their interests. Not only did the girls grow and bond together as a group, but they were able to interact with a variety of other Girl Scouts from around the world!

The girls visited the Tower of London, the London Bridge, Buckingham Palace and many other historic sites. They also visited Westminster Abbey, the House of Parliament and the Globe Theatre, where they saw a performance of Shakespeare’s play “Midsummer Night’s Dream.” The girls described the play as a “must-do” if you’re ever in London. The diverse culture these girls were able to explore was priceless. They were exposed to centuries of history, heard a variety of languages being used in the city, learned to negotiate in a different currency and expand their
