New chancellor leads CSU system
Dr . Timothy White took over as chancellor of the California State University system in late December , replacing Charles Reed , who retired after 14 years .
White had been chancellor of the University of California at Riverside . Earlier in his career , he served as provost at Oregon State University and then president of the University of Idaho . He earned degrees from Diablo Community College , Fresno State University , Cal State Hayward ( now East Bay ) and UC Berkeley .
University offers fully online degree programs
CSUMB is among the first CSU campuses to offer degrees through Cal State Online , an initiative intended to expand access to fully online bachelor ’ s and master ’ s degrees .
Two master of science degree programs are available through CSUMB , one in instructional science and technology , and another in management and information technology .
CSUMB honored for branding campaign
CSUMB earned an Award of Excellence from the Council for the Advancement and Support of Education ( CASE ) for its branding campaign .
Launched in the fall of 2012 , ads prepared for the campaign have been running in local newspapers and websites , and on a sign at Monterey Regional Airport . The new tagline , “ A Place of Extraordinary Opportunity ,” has been integrated into the university ’ s website and other messages .

In recognition of his work to promote service learning and community-campus partnerships throughout the Monterey Bay and Salinas Valley , Dr . Seth Pollack , director of CSUMB ’ s Service Learning Institute , was named winner of the 2013 Richard E . Cone Award by California Campus Compact .
Dr . Lanier Sammons , a lecturer in the Music and Performing Arts Department , received an ASCAP Plus Award in the concert music division . The award is given by the American Society of Composers , Authors and Publishers , and is based
on the unique value of each composer ’ s catalog of original compositions as well as recent performances .
Dr . John Avella was elected to the Monterey County Hospitality Association ’ s board of directors . Dr . Avella , assistant professor of hospitality management and hotel / resort management in the School of Business , serves on the association ’ s education committee .
Dio Mendoza and Juan Luna-Avin , instructors in the Visual and Public Art Department ,
had their own exhibition at San Jose City College ’ s Carmen Castellano Fine Arts Center .
Dr . Jennifer Fletcher , an associate professor in the Division of Humanities and Communication , wrote an article on the Collaborative Alliance for Postsecondary Success – a collaboration among CSUMB , Hartnell and Cabrillo colleges
– for the publication Liberal Education . The article , “ Critical Habits of Mind : Exposing the Process of Development ,” describes the habits-of-mind-based instructional approach developed to meet the needs of students in developmental math and writing classes .
A paper by Math Department faculty members Dr . Judith Canner and Jon Detka won an award for best contributed paper from the Mathematical Association of America ’ s special interest group for statistics education .
The CSU and Sony Electronics , in partnership with Intel , presented the Sony Electronics Faculty Award for Innovative Instruction with Technology to Dr . Kate Lockwood .
Lockwood , assistant professor in Information Technology and Communication Design , is helping students develop more advanced skills by “ flipping the classroom ” – allowing students to familiarize themselves with subjects through technology , followed by practical skills application in class .
