It wasn’t until the American Academy of Pediatrics and the Centers for Disease Control released recommendations about healthy school times that Yelland felt compelled to act. Research published by the AAP and CDC describe insufficient sleep in adolescents as a public health issue that negatively impacts their physical and psychological well-being, in addition to academic success. Through posts on Facebook, she met Valerie Crabtree, a licensed pediatric sleep psychologist. Like Yelland, Crabtree, also has children in local elementary and middle schools. “We both felt strongly about advocating for healthier start times at AHS,” Yelland explains. “Teaming up gave us the courage to take the next step and start an official chapter of Start School Later, a national organization advocating Inside this edition...
