Lewes LearningforLife 2016 AUTUMN COURSES Tutor: Geoffrey Mead BRIGHTON & HOVE Landscape and history beyond the Royal Pavilion Brighton & Hove has a distinctive human and built landscape. This course looks at the physical and social factors which influence the development of the city. 10 sessions from 13 September (Tuesdays 2-4pm) Fee: £86.10 Friends Meeting House, Friars Walk, Lewes BN7 2LE Tutor: Kay Blackburn THREE RENAISSANCE MASTERS Leonardo, Raphael and Michelangelo We will examine the work of these great artists, including the political, social and artistic context amd the shifts in patronage from Florence to Rome. 22 sessions from 21 September over two terms (Wednesdays 10am-12pm). Friends Meeting House, Friars Walk, Lewes BN7 2LE Fee: £92.25 per term THE RISE & FALL OF COMMUNISM Tutor: Paul Through documentary and film we trace Stalin’s imposition of communism in Legg Europe, followed by the Hungarian revolution, the Prague Spring and the Gorbachev-inspired decline. 10 sessions from 22 September (Thursdays 2-4pm) Fee: £86.10 Friends Meeting House, Friars Walk, Lewes BN7 2LE DAY SCHOOLS CARAVAGGIO Tutor: Bryan Davies The powerful sensual realism of Caravaggio seemed crude and provocative to his contemporaries, but he is now recognised as the most influential of all 17thC painters. Coincides with the National Gallery exhibition. Saturday 8 October (2-5pm) Fee: £15 St Thomas’s Church Hall, Cliffe High Street, Lewes BN7 2AH Tutor: Prasannajit de Silva THE RISE OF BRITISH LANDSCAPE PAINTING 1750-1850 This session will consider the growing interest in topographical images, explore aesthetic notions such as “the picturesque” and “the sublime”, and discuss how landscape artists engaged with ideas of Britishness and modernity.
