Outstanding Youth Philanthropy
Clare Vosberg of Clare Cares
Mike returned to Loras College in 2007 as
Director of the Loras Fund continuing to
progress through the advancement office
until he was named the vice president for
advancement in July of 2012. Over the past
three years, Loras has had the top three
cash fundraising years in the school’s 176year history.
Clare Szalkowski (not pictured) began
Clare Cares in January of 2014 with a
hope to put a Buddy Bench on her school’s
playground. Due to her unending work
to build friendships to end bullying and
the generosity of sponsors, there are now
more than 30 Clare Cares Buddy Benches
on local elementary schools in the tri-state
area. Clare’s mission statement is: “I’m a kid
who wants to change the world by building friendships and make our community
a better place.” Those are big words for a
ten-year-old, but she has been doing all of
that and more.
This is a credit to Mike’s constant encouragement and passion for the College. He
has spearheaded the College’s Inspiring
Lives & Leadership $100 million campaign,
the largest in school history. The original
$75 million goal was achieved two years
ahead of schedule, leading the Loras College Board of Regents to raise the goal to
$100 million while maintaining the original
She has worked with numerous nonprofits in the area to help fulfill needs within
their organizations with such projects as,
“Filling the Shelves with LOVE” in which
she provided St. Stephen’s Food Bank with
over a ton of food in January of 2015. She
also supported Opening Doors with her
“Birthday Wishes” project. She provided
22 complete birthday packages to children
who are residents of the shelter who were
then able to celebrate their special day,
although homeless. This year she will be
beginning her second year of support work
for Almost Home with the “Sack Lunch
Sundays” in which she plans and orchestrates volunteers to deliver sack lunches
every Sunday evening for the men who are
residents of the homeless shelter. Clare
would like to thank the entire community
who continue to support her mission to
change the world by building friendships
and making the community a better place.
