T he Sansepolcro Flag-Wavers, a group of drummers, trumpeters and flag-wavers from the Tuscan region of Italy, continue a tradition from the Middle Ages, when standardbearing officers led troops into battle. The Sansepolcro FlagWavers rediscovered this ancient art of flag waving, and their organization is the oldest of all groups involved in similar activities. The Sansepolcro Flag-Wavers have been traveling to New Orleans to perform for the last 30 years, and this year they will perform in New Orleans during the week of March 14. As they’ve done every March since 1970, the club will fill the Tony Siravo, 2016 French QuarGrand Marshal ter with Italian American marchers donning black tuxedos and 80-plus maids borne by the club’s Sicilian-style floats. On March 18, the club will host festivities at the New Orleans Riverside Hilton, including a free pasta party and a dinner honoring the 2016 Grand Marshal, actor Tony Siravo, who has had a prolific career on stage and screen.
