Issue 3 - Frequently Asked Questions

Issue 3 - Violet Township Road Levy Frequently Asked Questions 1. How can Violet Township use Issue 3 money? Issue 3 is for road maintenance and repair. These funds will be used to keep our roads safe and in good repair. That could include paving/resurfacing, sealing cracks so pot holes do not develop, snow and ice removal, maintaining road culverts and street signs, or mowing the right of ways so there are safe places to walk and ride bikes. The funds cannot be used for other budget areas. 2. Why is Issue 3 needed? Since 2010, the State of Ohio has eliminated or dramatically cut three important sources of funding for Townships. These include elimination of Tangible Personal Property Tax (TPP), reduction of the Local Government Fund (LGF) and elimination of estate taxes. These cuts by the state were significant; Violet Township gets about $730,000 less each year. Much of that money was used to supplement road maintenance. 3. How much money will this levy generate? The levy will raise an additional $770,000/year for five years. If the levy passes this March, the Township will start to receive money in 2017. 4. How much money will be available for road maintenance if Issue 3 does not pass? If the issue does not pass, only about $275,000 will be available for road maintenance each year. This comes from license plate fees, gasoline taxes and a small portion of real estate taxes. 5. How many miles of roads do we have in the Township? The Township is responsible for maintaining 105 miles of roadway. This is the same as a two-lane road from downtown Columbus to downtown Cincinnati. 6. What does it cost to resurface a mile of road? In 2016, it will cost about $85,000 to resurface a mile of road. Unfortunately, the cost has gone up by 125% over the past ten years; in 2006, it only cost $38,000. 7. How many miles of road are scheduled to be resurfaced in 2016? This year, only $275,000 is available for road maintenance. This provides funds to resurface less than three miles this year. The rest of the budget will be used for other types of road maintenance. Cost to resurface one mile of two-lane road $100,000 $85,000 $80,000 $60,000 $40,000 $38,000 $20,000 $0 Issue 3 - Our Roads.
