espite the fertile ground of a rich blues
legacy and an array of blues legends
that call Chicago home, there have been
very few cinematic narratives detailing Chicago
blues history from the perspective of living blues
musicians. Larry Taylor and Bonni McKeown
decided to change that with a screen adaptation
of their 2010 book, Stepson of The Blues (Peaceful
Patriot Press). The movie The Rhythm and The
Blues, set on the West Side and starring the actor
Leon, will highlight the story of legendary blues
died in 1985. His wife, Vera Taylor, was also a
blues singer who often performed with him and
all eight of their children developed into musicians. The Rhythm and The Blues tells the story of
Eddie Taylor's frustration with being cast in
Jimmy Reed's shadow and Larry Taylor's struggle to gain recognition from his father as he battles to become a blues musician in his own right,
while fighting against the forces of racism and
poverty.
