Grass Cutter

The shears are made from one
piece of metal, the blades facing
each other, widening as you go,
then the perpendicular twist
of the handle before the loop
of the spring. Brown with usage,
with rust, it works with a quiet
scrape, scrape, scraping at each cut.
And there Grandpa sits, perched
on the little yellow bath stool
cutting each blade of grass
with the patience of a barber—
the busy snipping cutting little
but making everything equal,
