KENTUCKY PHYSICIANS LEAD
AT AMA AS NEVER BEFORE
At the recent AMA Interim Meeting held in Atlanta
in mid-November, there were more leadership
posts held by physicians and other representatives from Louisville and Kentucky than ever before. Six GLMS executive officers are now serving
as AMA leaders in various posts with GLMS Board
Chair, Bruce Scott, MD, leading the charge as AMA
Vice Speaker of the House. Likewise, current AMA
President, Stephen Stack, MD, an ER doctor from
Lexington is joined by six other Kentucky physicians serving in prominent AMA positions while
practicing out in the state. Even KMA’s Executive
Vice President, Pat Padgett, is the new Chair of the
AMA’s Litigation Center. Needless to say, Kentucky
physicians are suddenly in a very unique position
to help guide national medical policy and care in

Dr. Scott officially began his duties as AMA Vice
Speaker at the meeting; a position in which he
expertly and successfully guided the house on
several hot button issues.
Perhaps the most substantial and controversial policy adopted at the meeting was a ban
on television advertisements for prescription
drugs and medical devices. The AMA released
a statement claiming the marketing could be
driving consumer demand for unnecessary and
expensive treatments. The AMA joins other major
health organizations, such as the World Health
Organization and the National Center for Health
Research, in pushing for the prescription drug
