GGEW NEWS SPRING 2015
Ella Haynes ‐ a former member of
4th Stanford‐le‐Hope Brownie Pack
(I say former, as the Award was
presented on the night that she
made per promise as a Guide in the
2nd Corringham Guide Unit).
Ella Joined the Pack at the age
of 7 and has been a kind, helpful,
polite, adorable Brownie ‐ but this
showed even more so about 18
months ago when Ella was made up
to a Sixer and at the same time we
were joined in the Pack by a
Brownie with a lot of additional
needs.
We put Natasha into Ella’s Six,
Natasha needs help with virtually
everything she does and Ella (as
Natasha’s Sixer) took it upon herself
to be a very special Brownie Buddy.
Ella would help Natasha with most
aspects of being a Brownie from
assisting with crafts (Ella putting
her own work to one side until she
had helped Natasha), to making sure
that Natasha understood and could take part in games, to helping Natasha put on her coat at the end
of a Pack meeting and making sure she had all of her belongings, letters, etc. Worried that Ella was
missing out on her own ‘fun’ as a Brownie, we attempted on several occasions to separate the two
girls by giving them different tasks, or working on different projects, but Ella would always go back to
make sure that Natasha was ‘coping’ or that somebody else was helping her.
The Leadership team at 4th SLH were all in agreement that Ella deserved special recognition for
her care and attention to Natasha, but even more importantly one of the other Brownies mentioned
that “Ella deserved a reward for looking after Natasha”. Even Natasha’s parents were amazed at the
care that Ella gave to Natasha ‐ apparently Natasha talked of Ella constantly at home (the girls don’t
know each other outside Brownies).
I completed a nomination form for a County Achievement Award with a ‘back up’ statement from
the other Brownie that had suggested Ella be rewarded. When Sandra informed me that Ella’s
application had been granted, we were absolutely thrilled. We decided to make the Presentation on
the night that she made her Promise as a Guide as all the Brownies and Guides would be present, as
would Ella’s parents (this was a surpirse to them). As you can see from the picture, Jan Knight came
along to make the presentation. CHRIS SKINNER
