Laura Barritt of the 2nd
Loughton St John’s Guides - was
nominated for her exceptional
support and hard work over 13
months in helping her sister Amy
as well as Ellie, Rosa, Katherine
and Alice reach their target of fully
Laura Barritt and Rona Domania with Jan Knight
funding their trip to the World Scout
Jamboree. The target was £10,500, the girls and their families planned a programme of events - two
Brownie discos, two adult quiz nights, numerous cake sales and tuck shops, car washing, two bag
packing days, and a Brownie craft afternoon. Laura was always there with a smile on her face cheerfully
turning her hand to whatever task was required - setting up tables and chairs, helping Brownies, selling
sweets & counting coins & packing bags. Throughout she has been an excellent role model and
advertisement for Guiding. She certainly has plenty of fund raising ideas and will be a great ambassador.
Roma Damania of the 3rd Loughton Brownie Unit. The Unit was camping at Chigwell Row. One of our
Young Leaders let us down at the last minute, which left us with a Young Leader, Katy, sleeping on her
own. The age difference and lack of tent space meant she was unable to share with the Guides. The
Young Leader would have had to be sent home if Roma had not stepped in and offered to share the tent
with her. Roma went over each evening once she had finished helping her own group, and first thing in
the morning she would return to them. She mixed with the Guides and Leaders, and blended in so well, it
was as if she was part of our Unit. She gave up the time she could have spent with her family and unit,
to help us out and to give Katy the opportunity to attend the whole weekend. It was felt this is a good
example of the 4th Guide law, a Guide is a good friend and sister to all Guides, and therefore Roma
was nominated for this award.
Jan Knight has also presented a County Achievement
Award to Sophie Gardiner, a Senior Section member from
Ongar

Sophie’s Leader said
“Sophie has shown that she is a friend and sister to all Guides. She
has been a Buddy to a fellow member of the unit who has hearing loss.
Taking great care to ensure her peer understands instructions etc, while
on activities such as sailing, climbing, abseiling, driving and gliding.
Sophie also put herself forward to volunteer as a buddy f or a young
girl with Cerebral Palsy.
Within the unit Sophie is a great role model, she encourages the
younger girls in all aspects of our guiding.
Sophie, was able to take part in an international Guiding trip to Peru
and was grateful when other members of the unit took part in her fund
raising activities, never taking them for granted.
She is a selfless , bright young lady a pleasure to have in the unit. A true sister to all Guides.”
A fellow Senior Guide said.
“Sophie is as lovely girl who is incredibly supportive to all of us in the Senior Section; she encourages
us in everything we undertake and advises us whenever we need it. She is a role model to the younger
members of our unit; she is a sister to all guides. Sophie also is a buddy to a member of the unit who has
a hearing loss, she helps her with anything and the two of them have developed a great friendship.”
