Big Brownie Birthday Bash not to be missed lans are racing ahead to ensure that the County’s Brownies will have a brilliant time when we celebrate the 100th birthday of Brownies in 2014. More than 500 Brownies have already expressed their interest in coming to the event at the Helena Romanes School in Great Dunmow on the 21st June next year and the team organising the event are working hard to ensure everyone has a brilliant day. Exactly what is in store for them will be revealed later but enough to say there are some ‘timbers to be shivered!’ The team have designed a mascot which is currently being made and should be available around September, but before then there will be a Countywide competition to give our furry mascot a name and details of that will be announced soon. The team is sure that our mascot will take her place alongside Crystal, the bear which was the County mascot for the Centenary in 2010 and we hope to see all sorts of pictures of her in all sorts of places, just like Crystals Travels! So, keep the date free- 21st June 2014- and watch out for more details P COUNTY SECRETARY Daphne Richards 146 Knights Way Brentwood CM13 2ER 0787 511 2357 [email protected] COUNTY TREASURER David Brampton Carters Cottage High Wych Sawbridgeworth, Herts 01279 724744 [email protected] COUNTY OFFICE NEW ADDRESS Girlguiding Essex West Suite S1 Bates Business Centre Church Road Harold Wood Romford, RM3 0JF PERIODIC NEWSLETTER FOR GIRLGUIDING ESSEX WEST SPRING 2013 Ongar District Senior Guides take on Red Nose Day Challenge with Helen Skelton he Girls of the Ongar District Senior Guide Section proved they were up for a challenge by backing Blue Peter presenter Helen Skelton’s bid to set a new world record while raising funds for Comic Relief. The fundraising wonder woman has set herself seven magnificent challenges which she has vowed to complete in only seven weeks – and she offered Girlguiding members a unique chance to lend a hand. The Ongar Senor Section was chosen from thousands of groups invited to come up with their own fundraising events – the wackier the better - to back the daredevil presenter’s campaign in the run-up to Red Nose Day. The group of seven girls, all aged between 14 and 18, chose to arrange a Sponsored hike dressed in pyjamas in the cold and dark! Nathalie Elston –Hooper 17 said: “It was a real challenge and we all enjoyed it. It’s great to think that, by working together and having fun, we can make a difference to people in need. Veronica Riches , Senior Guide Leader, said: “The girls were really excited about this project, we have done lots of fund raising for local and world wide groups before but having a TV crew and Helen with the girls made it that much of a special event. The girls and myself have had to keep the filming quiet, this has been a task on its own especially for teenage girls! We do not have a total of what the girls have raised yet, but I’m sure people have been generous , it was pitch black across the fields and with the wind chill factor got down to -2 “ It shows what a difference girls in guiding can make.” Girlguiding groups nationwide have also been hard at work crafting their own giant fabric triangles to help create the world’s largest bunting line, which Helen – a former Brownie herself - displayed along the 2,200-metre Humber Bridge as one of her Magnificent 7.
