USAF Needs New Long Range Bombers

By Cadet Eric Eberhart

When the annual Air Force Association Air Warfare Symposium was held on Thursday February 24, 2014 in Orlando, FL, one of the major messages that were discussed was the potential for a new long-range strike bomber in the United States Air Force. Some of the panelists on this panel that defended this notion said that a new bomber is a key asset for the future of the Air Force. Lt. General Burton Field was one of the members who stressed the importance of a long-range bomber, “Bombers can send messages. They can influence or initiate action, and they are credible because of what they have done in the past…Bombers can send messages fast, and they send messages with credibility.” Upon further discussion of the importance of a new bomber, he referred to specific missions that previous bombers, such as the B-2 and B-52, have been used for, and how a new long-range bomber would be beneficial towards achieving future missions.
