A friend recently went to a Catholic Church in Kayole where she was stopped at the gate by a church elder, and told not to come to Church in a trouser the following Sunday. “We will have to turn you away if you do!” My friend was not amused and has sworn to go for mass elsewhere. Do you think the church should have a say on how people dress to mass? Why?  I would also take it very badly if someone told me what to wear to church but I know there are some clothes which if I wore to church, would serve to distract others. I think the church should have a say, as for where they say should be, who says it and how it is said, is a different matter. Sophia Muchiri, Meru-Kenya  Yes I do. Let’s do the right thing at the right place with the right intention. When we go to church we are not going for fashion show or beauty contest. People should dress to match the occasion. Otherwise why haven’t I ever seen anybody wearing a night dress to mugithi night? Lynn Mich Shiku, Meru- KENYA Well, perhaps because that particular mischievous elder likes to see nice legs, No respectful Catholic would dare show up in a bikini, I’m sure. Yet, there are so many contradictions. Cover your head but show your legs. What if a Scot showed up in the traditional kilt, would he still be allowed in with his hairy legs? Every province in every country seems to have different opinions of what God might approve or not. Anna M. Szlavid, Toronto – CANADA God is interested in a broken heart however one should dress moderately to control temptation Ngotho Peter, Mombasa - KENYA If I may ask, what is in a trouser? Are women in skirt and men in trousers holier than women in trousers and men in skirts? God looks at the heart. This kind of backwardness must stop, not because it is archaic but because it is not Christian. Otieno wuo Adhiambo, Bogota - COLUMBIA What the hell is that? Dressing code in the church? I guess Jesus has nothing to do with dressing code. These are social codes that may end up harming the image of the church. The church is a place for all with or without trouser. What of if a man walked into the same church in a min-skit? He should be let in too.  Awiti Maurice, Riobamba - ECUADOR Some skirts and dresses may expose more than a decent pair of trousers. All in all what matters most is ones heart, not the dressing. Not unless the dressing is negatively suggestive. Everyone should be free to wear what they are comfortable in. Franca Najma, Nairobi - KENYA Christ came for sinners. Without stains, the OMO factory is null and void. Mwangi Kuria Kuria, Nairobi-Kenya   If you dress well (respectfully) when going to work in a human institution, dress even better when you go to worship God. If we dress well because our work code of ethics demands so, God demands we be in our best for Sunday worship as individuals and as a community. Daniel Mutuku, Nairobi - KENYA In as much as Jesus loves and accepts us in whichever way we go to him, it is true some dressings are not be fit to be worn in worship house. The church leader was to let the girl understand the vice and not issue threats. How would I want to receive my God? In tight trousers, mini, transparent, skirt, dresses short? Let us all be cautious of what we wear, when, where, for what and why. Nelly Handa, Kisumu -KENYA Sometimes the Church elders are the problem. One such elder took 30 minutes to tell us not to wear T- Shirt to church. Decent clothing changes with time, we cannot always be in the 1940s. So on there will be only skirt suits, suit and ties and kitenges in church but not a youth in sight. Decency or lack of it is in the mind. Ted Iregi, Nairobi- KENYA Even as students at KU we find it difficult to cope with some kind of trousers put on by fellow ladies and that is a university not church! You look at them and you feel ashamed on their behalf. Ladies should be decent. Issabel Atieno, Nairobi –KENYA 6 THE SEED - VOL 25, No. 8 AUGUST 2013
