Measure of America: A project of
the Social Science Research Council,
similar to the human development
index used by the United Nations
Development Program, measuring

Millennium Development Goals
(MDGs): A global agreement officially
adopted at the United Nations in the
year 2000. The goals serve as a road
map for development outcomes to be
achieved by 2015.
Monetary policy: Actions undertaken
by a central bank, such as the Federal
Reserve, to influence the availability
and cost of money and credit to help
promote national economic goals.
National debt: The total outstanding
debt obligations of the federal
government. The value of the debt is
measured in terms of the amount of
securities issued by the Treasury and
other federal agencies.

Productivity growth: The ability to
produce more with the same or less
input. The U.S. economy has been
able to produce more goods and
services over time, not by requiring
a proportional increase of labor time,
but by making production more
efficient.

Scaling Up Nutrition (SUN)
movement: An international
movement uniting people—from
governments, civil society, the United
Nations, donors, businesses and

with shared nutrition goals and
mobilize resources to effectively
scale up nutrition, with a core focus
on empowering women.
