colorful and exciting painting, but it is not an Impressionist painting. Mary Cassatt’s The Visitor, on the other hand, is a marvelous example of Impressionism. There is a woman seated and still. How is this different from the weighty stillness of Fantin-Latour’s Still Life? Cassatt achieves stillness and gravity without detail, without careful transcription. The window to the left is a morass of abstract color. The woman’s body is a quick descent into sketchiness. Only her face is detailed, and this is relative to the lack of detail elsewhere in the painting. Cassat does not include a great deal of physical information on her face. We often hear the term Post-Impressionism and it certainly must be confusing to many museum-goers. Post-Impressionism refers to the many paths in painting taken in the wake of Impressionist innovations. Impressionism made light, color and atmosphere into primary subjects, not just supporting actors in a painting.
