Impressionism from Monet to Matisse

Why do throngs of people love
Impressionism? The answer is perhaps
best given in a picture, proverbially worth
a thousand words: Edgar Degas’ Dancer
Adjusting Her Shoe.
Here is an image that immediately arrests
our vision. It depicts a young woman
dressed in her ballet costume where a
burst of white tutu expands fanlike around
her body, and the sensuous presence of
her back jumps out in stark relief. A blue
ribbon tied about her waist floats at the
drawing’s center like a cloud. We feel at
once the variety of textures so expertly
drawn and sense the downward motion
of her body. The action is simple but
elegant, the color minimal yet compelling,
the angle of view dramatic yet rational.
It is a story in an instant, a slice of life
we understand and appreciate. We know
without words how the everyday moment
may contain beauty.
A treasure trove of Impressionist pictures
is on view at the Columbia Museum of
Art in Impressionism from Monet to Matisse
from January 25 to April 21, 2013. The
exhibition includes 55 works of art that
are the stars of the Dixon Gallery and
