The Baker & Baker Foundation Presents: Art of Music
Music in European Culture I: Gregorian
Chant to Mozart (“Music 101”)
Wednesdays, March 2 through April 6
(6-week lecture series) 10:00 - 11:00 a.m.
A six-week introduction to the history of
European music from its beginnings in
Ancient Greece and the early Christian
church to the golden age of Haydn and
Mozart. Through musical examples,
visual images, and historical accounts,
these discussions, led by the Museum’s
popular adjunct curator of music Dr. Peter
Hoyt, explore how music mirrored the
developments in Western art, philosophy,
and politics. Series: $80 / $64 for
members. Individual Class: $15 / $12 for
members.
An Evening with Botticelli and Respighi
Wednesday, March 30 | 7:30 p.m.
Enjoy a night featuring
one of the most
imaginative composers
of the twentieth
century and one of the
most celebrated artists
of the Renaissance. Ottorino Respighi’s
masterful technique of instrumental color
and sonority, meets Sandro Botticelli’s
masterpieces in Trittico Boticelliano. Join the
Museum’s chief curator Todd Herman and
South Carolina Philharmonic conductor
Morihiko Nakahara in the galleries for
a discussion featuring the Museum’s
Botticelli painting, The Nativity and musical
illustrations from the Philharmonic’s
woodwind section. Purchase tickets early
as seating is limited. $35 / $25 for Museum
members and Philharmonic subscribers
