Meet Gladys!
It’s with great enthusiasm that the
Columbia Museum of Art introduces the
newest member of our art family – Gladys!
Gladys the grasshopper came to live at the
CMA more than 15 years ago. For all that
time, she was one feature among many on
a lovely piece of French furniture. Because
she is very small and low to the ground, she
was sometimes overlooked by grown-ups.
But the children could always find her,
because children know what it’s like to be
small. Gladys was so happy to be found by
so many children that she decided to help
them find other exciting things in the art at
the Museum.
Gladys is always looking for more ways to
learn about the Museum and the artwork
she lives with. Lucky for her she possesses
infinite curiosity, a sense of adventure and
an insatiable thirst for knowledge. Having
just recently come to life, she is ready to
explore the Museum with her new friends
– you! She urges children and adults to
take in their surroundings and notice the
details – through the powers of observation
and exploration, fueled by curiosity.
Let’s get to know Gladys a bit better! CMA

friend. Here’s what she learned:
Gladys, where are you from?
I was born in France at the turn of the last century,
between 1900-1910. I have lived in many different
houses, and then I finally came to live at the
Columbia Museum of Art in 1997.
What are you made of?
