Art of Music: MUSIC 101 SERIES
Music in European Culture II:
Romanticism in the Nineteenth Century from Beethoven to Richard Strauss
Wednesdays, April 11- May 16 | 10:00 – 11:00 am
By popular demand, the entertaining and educational Music 101 lecture series resumes
exploration of music, art, and society during the romantic and revolutionary 19th
century. Peter Hoyt, the Museum’s adjunct curator for music, presents an overview of the
tumultuous period that begins with Beethoven and encompasses beloved composers like
Schubert, Chopin, and Brahms. These discussions illuminate the dynamic culture that
produced some of the greatest masterworks in the European concert tradition. In addition
to examining the interrelationships between composers and painters, the lectures emphasize
how an increasingly mechanized world began to shape the modern musical experience.
$80 / $64 for members. Admission for individual lectures is $15 / $12 for members.
