Remember: employers are able to view your information by conducting keyword searches and seeking out profiles matching those searches. • Research employers by industries, employer pages, and other professional profiles. • Search for people you may know and connect with them. • Send your contacts inMail to network professionally. • Join groups based on skills, interests, and industries. • Be on the lookout for job and internship postings! Used to generate conversations between friends, and most commonly used for personal means, Facebook can also be utilized for professional networking. What to do: • Create a professional page with your personal profile or create a seperate account. • Manage your content and privacy settings. Keep your personal profile private and your professional page open. Remember: 37 percent of employers use Facebook to pre-screen applicants. • View and like profile pages of employers to receive updates and newsfeed information to learn about company culture and possible openings. • Like other resources specific to location, industry, skills, and interests to learn about communities to live and work in. • Search for people you may know and post on employer walls or message them directly. • Tag and message contacts to start a conversation. Known as a micro blog, tweets of up to 140 characters highlight news articles, current events, and employement opportunities on Twitter. What to do: • Create a profile with a tagline that makes you stand out! • Choose if you want a public or private profile and opt to require requests from Twitter users in order to follow you. • Tweet about current experiences and interests. • Search for emploers, job boards, and other relevant resources to stay up to date on opportunities. • Employers often tweet job openings with the job title and a link to job description and application . . . be on the lookout! Remember: accredited accounts and/or users are promoted and include a blue check mark next to their user name, marking it as official and credible. • Include profile names (@) when you tweet to catch potential employers’ attention. • Hashtag (#) certain words within a tweet to start or be included in a specific discussion.
