Kevin’s Kackle!
When you first get asked to become the Junior Vice President, the time when you will become President seems years
away but I took over as President from a very successful
year by David Ball. What an amazing man! What an amazing
Presidential year he led! Thank you David.
I had the honour of appointing Derek Wood as President
Elect and Past President John Maddox as Junior Vice. John
will be our very first person to hold the office of President
twice as in his year we will celebrate 90 years of service to
the community.
I also had the honour of presenting Immediate Past President David Ball with his own neck decoration and a tankard.
That afternoon, as is now the tradition, I had the privilege of attending the Elderly Person’s Outing at Poplar’s Garden Centre along with IPP David Ball and JVP John
Maddox. After a delayed start (caused by serious motorway problems), it all went very
well, the elderly people seemed to really enjoy their afternoon cream teas and sandwiches and we were able to present a cheque to the Greenfingers Trust which is Poplar’s chosen charity. – Then of course – I promptly disappeared! – off to Wimbledon for
two weeks!
Whilst away at Wimbledon, it was great to hear the news that our club has been recognised for working together in the community – especially with Signposts and the Bandstand Project.
Back I came from Wimbledon and took the President’s chair for the meeting of 16 th
July, this was a special meeting as I had the honour to induct Jonathan Siegler into our
club. Jonathon’s family have a long association with Rotary and it was good to be
joined by fellow Rotarians from Luton Someries. Welcome into our club Jonathon, we
are delighted you have chosen to join us and we hope you enjoy your time with us. Our
own Paul Bithrey gave us a talk on his job. Paul has had a long successful and interesting career. Thank you very much Paul for sharing with us.
The following morning was a sad occasion as we said farewell to a very long standing,
distinguished and much loved Rotarian at the funeral of Geoffrey Squires. Geoffrey
gave his life to the service of others and was particularly instrumental in the setting up
of Keech Hospice in its early days. A poignant thought for me was that as President,
Geoffrey had been my predecessor exactly 40 years previously. What a long, active and
effective Rotarian Geoffrey was. Farewell Geoffrey, you will be missed by all of us.
