Facilitator: Cindy Kaufman and Dana Gerbie Klein, Alexander Muss High School in Israel Additional Information The success of Abraham and Moses stands in contrast to the failure of the prophet Elijah. After his triumph on Mt. Carmel over the priests of Baal, Elijah is targeted for assassination by Queen Jezebel. Fleeing for his life to the wilderness of Judea, he prays for death. Instead, G-d has him journey for 40 days and 40 nights to Mt. Sinai where he enters a cave. There, G-d asks him, “What are you doing here, Elijah?” At that moment, with all the echo of Moses’ experience sounding in our ears, we expect Elijah to mount a Moses-like defense of the people. Overcome by his love for G-d, Elijah instead twice provides a brief for the guilt of Israel. Seeking a “people’s defender” like Moses, G-d got instead a prosecuting attorney.
