Arrupe Summer Program 2016 Newsletter

The best five weeks of the summer Classes, sports, arts, field trips, frozen treat Fridays—which was your favorite? W hat a summer! It always goes by so quickly that we almost never have enough time to sit back and realize how much happened during the Arrupe Summer Program until it’s all said and done. So what happened during those five weeks? Inspired by the camp theme of R.E.A.C.H. For the Gold our 270+ campers and counselors gave their best effort in daily classes like math, language arts, science and healthy habits. They showed off their creative side in arts activities like woodshop, watercolor painting, culinary arts and LEGO Robotics. And don’t forget all of the sports: whiffle ball, basketball, volleyball, lacrosse, soccer. We had some stellar artists and athletes this summer! We travelled all over Greater Cleveland for five different field trips, ranging from Avon to downtown to Chardon. Campers explored the Duct Tape Factory, caught a screening of “Finding Dory” at Tower City, roamed the vast grounds of the Cleveland Metroparks, toured Progressive Field, threw down strikes at a pair of bowling alleys, had fun in the sun at Mentor Headlands Beach, and capped it all off with a day-long adventure at Pioneer Waterland! Did you forget about all the special schedules and other events that were part of ASP? Once again, participants raced against the clock to make a mummy, stack dice on a popsicle stick, or pass a hula hoop around a group during Minute-to-Win-It. The Arrupe Explorers put together another phenomenal Field Day, with a bunch of different outdoor and indoor games all around Urban Community School. The annual Family Open House Night was also a highlight, especially for the adult “Green Shirt” staff, who got to meet the parents of both campers and counselors alike. We were honored to have 400 guests that evening and show off all the great work that takes place at ASP. Thanks to everyone who filled out our parent survey. Your feedback will be very helpful as we work to make next year’s summer program even better. All ASP campers are reminded that they are invited to participate in Arrupe afterschool programs during the academic year. Arrupe offers programs for tutoring, playing sports, learning the violin, doing various arts, building with LEGO robotics, and building mentoring relationships with high school volunteers. Programs will begin in midSeptember and run for nine weeks at a time. You can learn more by visiting our website at www.ignatius.edu/Arrupe_AfterSchool.
