General Surgery Residency

Colon & Rectal Surgery Fellowship

The Mount Carmel General Surgery residency training program is a fully accredited, fiveyear program designed to qualify residents for the American Board of Surgery examination
and Fellowship in the American College of Surgeons. The surgical program is non-pyramidal
and has 18 residents. There are three categorical program residents per year and three
preliminary residents. The residency is based out of our two main hospitals, Mount Carmel
West and Mount Carmel East, and our outpatient facility, Green Street Surgery Center.

The Colon and Rectal Surgery Fellowship program at Mount Carmel is the latest of seven
ACGME-accredited programs at Mount Carmel. The program seeks highly motivated
applicants who are hard-working and have an interest in research. Our fellows obtain a
very well rounded education in all aspects of the specialty. There are a great many cases
in abdominal and anorectal surgery, as well as endoscopic procedures. The program
has a high volume of laparoscopic and robotic surgeries, as well as complex anorectal
reconstructions, TEM, and physiologic lab experiences.

Mount Carmel’s General Surgery program seeks to train general surgeons who are
outstanding clinicians. Our graduates have an intense commitment to patient care and
lifelong learning. We assist in the development of clinical knowledge and maturity, as well
as the acquisition of surgical judgment. We provide our trainees with a strong foundation
of academic excellence, sound technical skills, clinical research, and an understanding of
contemporary issues in surgical practice.

The General Surgery program features a balance of clinical and basic science that covers the
entire primary and secondary surgical disciplines and prepares residents for the certifying
and qualifying examinations of the American Board of Surgery. Clinical and basic science
research are strongly encouraged. General Surgery residents receive a full spectrum of
surgical training, including training in head and neck, thoracic, cardiovascular, endocrine,
trauma, gastrointestinal tract, pediatric, breast, neurologic, oncologic, plastic, urologic,
and transplant surgery. Extensive peripheral vascular experience includes endovascular
surgery, while a very busy advanced laparoscopic experience
