OB/GYN Residency

Orthopedic Surgery Residency

Mount Carmel Health System and The Ohio State University (OSU) integrated our OB/GYN
residencies in 1995. This exciting program offers the best of two worlds — the strength of a
large academic medical center and collaboration among leading community hospitals. Our
program combines the superb facilities and high-volume of Mount Carmel with the excellent
resources of OSU into a model 48-month obstetrics/gynecology residency.

The Mount Carmel Health System Orthopedic Residency Training Program has been in
existence since 1945. It is a five-year program that is fully accredited by the ACGME. The
residency program offers two positions per year.
Residents are delegated progressively greater responsibilities as their skills and judgment
grow. During PGY-5, participants operate relatively independently as chief residents for
procedures for which they have demonstrated capabilities.

The program has 44 residents per year. Eleven residents at each level of training rotate
among OSU’s Wexner Medical Center, Mount Carmel West and Mount Carmel St. Ann’s
in blocks ranging from four to six weeks. Residents rotate through obstetrics, benign
gynecology, maternal fetal medicine, urogynecology, and gynecological oncology, infertility
and emergency medicine. Faculty members at all of the hospitals offer training expertise in
advanced surgical techniques along with basic and clinical research.

The residency program offers outstanding resources for general obstetrics and gynecology
and their subspecialties, plus a strong base in ambulatory care. The goal is to help residents
gain the experience and skills they need to become successful healthcare practitioners.

The unique strength of our orthopedic residency at Mount Carmel is rooted in the high
caliber of individuals who match with our program. Each prospective candidate explores
the program and meets with attending faculty. Our aim is to select residents who fit the
mission and philosophy of the institution and to provide them with a rich and rewarding
educational experience.

Our well-rounded program includes outpatient training, inpatient care of complex patients,
and a structured didactic curriculum that meets all Residency Review Committee (RRC)
accreditation requirements and Council on Resident Education in Obstetrics and Gynecology
(CREOG) objectives.

The educational objectives for the OB/GYN residency training program are as follows:
• To train competent and compassionate clinicians who will deliver state-of-the-art,
complete health care for women in a humane and personalized manner
• To provide a solid foundation in general obstetrics and gynecology to prepare residents
for a career in general obstetrics and gynecology or fellowship training
• To provide residents with a basic understanding of, and appreciation for, research
methodology within our specialty. To help each resident develop the ability to critically
evaluate medical literature and develop a scholarly approach to patient care that she/he
will maintain throughout her/his career.
• To help our residents develop an appreciation and understanding of our nation’s diversity
so that they can provide medical care in a compassionate, non-judgmental manner.

Upon completion of the Mount Carmel Orthopedic Residency Training Program, our
graduates possess a solid knowledge base and sound decision-making and technical skills.
We strive to provide a well-rounded educational experience in all aspects of orthopedic
surgery so that our graduates are prepared to directly enter an orthopedic practice. Many of
our residents who have chosen to pursue fellowship training have been very successful in
obtaining competitive positions in a variety of orthopedic subspecialties.

My residency at Mount Carmel not only gave me the surgical confidence to
begin my career, but also afforded me the opportunity to obtain a fellowship
with internationally renowned adult reconstruction surgeons!
