ARTIST PROFILE: Our featured artist this month is Ibrahima Samaké, called Boura, a sculptor who comes from the Bambara tribe from the region of Segu in Mali. Give us a short background on yourself. My father was a dealer in antiques and his oldest brother was a sculptor. Presently I live in Hamburg, Germany where I continue the art of making sculptures. Did you always want to be an artist? As a child, since I was 11, I helped my father and oldest brother to make objects, to cast them and to polish them for the family business. These surroundings gave me the opportunity to learn many different art forms from Mali. I did not plan to become an artist, but over time I started to create my own works, developing my own ideas and creativity. Which artists, African and abroad, have inspired your work? I wanted to be like Michelangelo and Auguste Rodin. Michelangelo was a scientist and also an artist. His works look perfect. I am an engineer in mechanics, so I am also interested in science and art. I was also fascinated by Auguste Rodin’s works. Ousmane Sow, Boura, comes from the Bambara tribe from the region of Segu in Mali. Presently he lives in Hamburg, Germany where he continues his art of making sculptures. ABOUT BOURA Cell: +49-176-64-360-308 Email: [email protected] i 100 africandesignmagazine.com
