Session II: Sunday, November 24, 2013 Estimate Estimate France – Foreign Covers, cont. 2366 1912 RARE TITANIC COVER IN PREMIUM CONDITION ....................................................... PH $5000-7000 Quite possibly the finest existing ‘Titanic’ cover (most have tears or other significant faults), one of only 14 known and documented covers slated for transit on the ill-fated ship and transferred to a different vessel due to launch delay of the ‘Titanic’. All known covers were mailed in March 1912 and sent to the M.A. Winters Company in Washington, DC. This cover bears a 25c French Sower stamp (on reverse), tied by indistinct March 13 ‘Sathonay-Camp’ postmark, and clear Washington, DC, March 27 machine cancel. On front, below slightly cleaner ‘Sathonay-Camp’ postmark, is the distinctive and bold ‘TITANIC’ marking, handstamped in violet, as well as a violet boxed Winter Co (recipient) March 28 receiving mark, and registration number. Due to travel schedules, cover was likely carried aboard the ‘Batavia’. The ‘Titanic’ was originally scheduled to set sail March 20, 1912, with a stop at Cherbourg to take on mail and passengers. We know, of course, the launch was postponed until April 10, because the vessel was not quite ready. Philatelic mementos of the ‘Titanic’ are extremely rare, consisting of a few covers and cards dropped off at Cherbourg or Queenstown (now Cobh, Ireland), after the liner left Southampton, but before the failed crossing, and those few marked ‘Titanic’ were sent to Washington in March. This well documented example (#14 in census) is fresh and extremely fine. An extremely RARE and desirable exhibition piece! An analysis of all known covers may be found at: www.titaniccovers.com. 2368 Nine picture postcards (five different), gray or white stock, most with special postmarks, for Goebbels’ 1942 anti-Bolshevik exhibition held in Berlin.
