Postmarked ‘Paris/R.St.Domque St Gn 53’ on January 15, 1871 at 6am, which is late for the 3am flight on that date of the ‘Vaucanson’ balloon. Red boxed ‘PP’ at left, no receiver on back. Charming letter in French, English translation included, the writer assures her sister that she and their mother were OK during the siege, ‘We do not have an abundance but we are not dying of hunger. We regale ourselves with horseflesh and rice...instead of beef or mutton we have horse meat, dog, cat, even rat, very delicious food!’ Soiled, separations at folds, fine. Franked with China Carp 20¢ stamp tied by CANTON cds ‘1 JUL 01,’ and with large bold ‘R’ to Haiphong, in combination with pair of Hong Kong 10¢ Victoria stamps on reverse, tied by framed ‘I.P.O.’ cancel. Transit ‘HONG KONG JY 2 01’ and arrival ‘5 JUL 01.’ Very fine.
