‘1.8’ to Philadelphia; 1825 to Philadelphia with red Savannah
postmark, red ‘PAID’ and manuscript ‘25’; 1837 business
correspondence in French, New York to Wohlen, Switzerland,
with red crayon ‘48’ and ‘39’, red handstamp ‘C.T.F’ and black
boxed Le Havre transit mark; 1848 to Washington, PA, with
bold blue ‘Brownsville Pa’ postmark and blue ‘5’ in circle
handstamp; cover to Watertown, NY, with red straightline
‘STEAM’ and red ‘10’ in circle, used by steamers in Detroit
c.1845-50; ladies’ cover with manuscript ‘Paid 3’ and ‘Pillar
Point/Jan 24 1853,’ to Vermillion, NY, Pillar Point is small
settlement on Lake Ontario, enclosure; 1856 folded letter to
Paris, manuscript ‘per “Canada”,’ black ‘8,’ red ‘New-York/
Am. Pkt’ datestamp, black Calais transit on front, red British
transit mark on back along with two strikes ‘Forwarded By/
Robert & Williams/New-York’ red ovals; 1867 folded letter to
Parnac, France, black San Francisco cds, blue merchant’s oval,
blue Calais transit, Paris & Parnac cds on back. Generally fine
to very fine with typical faults as small tears or file folds.

Two folded letters, each franked with 9X1b: (1) to West
Roxbury, MA, franked with single tied with blue pen strokes
and tiny part red NEW YORK cds, matching red ‘PAID’ in arc
at left, heavy file fold through stamp, otherwise very fine; and
(2) cover to NC, franked with single with blue pen cancel, NY
cds at side, margins clear to touching or just in on all four
corners, just fine. Cat $1700.

(1) 1847 FRANKLIN 5¢ RED BROWN, TWO SINGLES,
ST. LOUIS TO NEW YORK CITY .............................. PH

Two singles tied with multiple strikes of red ‘St. LOUIS, Mo./
10’ cds, to blue folded letter sheet to New York. Both stamps
with rich color and impression, left stamp extremely fine
showing tiny parts of adjacent stamps above & below, right
stamp with huge margins to just in bottom right. Letter sheet
with horizontal filing fold at bottom and tiny edge wear at top,
fine to very fine, scarce and desirable. (1975 PF Cert #51 339).

Reportedly the only known 1847 usage from this historic town,
to NH, franked with two overlapping singles, one fine, one
very fine, with red grid cancels and faint Lewiston, NY, cds.
Light wear, very fine. Cat $1025.
