E (1330E) 1967 ORIGINAL ARTWORK FOR
REJECTED DAVY CROCKETT STAMP .................. PH $1000
Original 7x12½” (image size) oil painting on 12x15½” canvas
of Davy Crockett on orange field in front of Alamo. Painting
signed both below image and to the left of it. The artist
Cheesman sent his design to Postmaster General Lawrence
O’Brien Jan 6, 1967, only to have it returned (registered) with
a letter stating an artist for the issue had already been chosen.
Lot includes painting, covers to and from USPOD, several
pieces of correspondence, press releases, clippings and a photo
essay (promotional) of final design. We were not able to locate
letter from O’Brien’s office. Still, fantastic group of showpiece
archival material and cornerstone for potential exhibit. Fine.
